Golf courses can be found on many of the islands and is well-liked among tourists. There are museums and historical remains of the legendary Guanche people. Religion is prominent and there are colourful festivals to honour the patron saints. Music is enjoyed and many open air concerts take place. The region has four National Parks which are also well worth a visit.
The cuisine combines traditional Spanish recipes mixed with African and Latin-America influences. Salted fish is common served with potato. The climate allows for a range of exotic fruits and vegetables meaning there is always something tempting. Olives are grown in abundance and healthy olive oil is used in lots of cooking.

Handicrafts are excellent from this part of the world and include woodcarvings, embroidery and basket-work based on palm leaves. The olive oil and wines are of a premium quality and many tourists buy these to take home.
Shops close from 1pm until 4pm (check locally), however they open until late in the evening.
