Balmoral has been extensively refitted to serve as a Fred Olsen ship – carrying 1,348 passengers, she is also the biggest ship to sail for them.
Her casino was stripped out and the resulting space allowed the ship to build in an internet café, an excellent library and a first for Fred Olsen – a pub! There are some concerns being expressed by disabled passengers about this ‘stretched’ ship – wheelchair access is quite difficult to some areas and there are only 4 lifts for 1300 passengers, also some of the older cabins have immovable beds and you need to ask extremely clearly about this if having a queen-sized bed is important to you.
On the other hand, the new cabins with balconies have a universal thumbs-up and the pub seems to be a very popular innovation. Passenger age is similar to other Fred Olsen ships as far as can be told this early in her career and there are no more facilities for children than usual.
With the introduction of the company’s fifth vessel, the newly extended and refurbished Balmoral - named in honour of the Scottish Royal estate - Fred. Olsen is taking cruising to a new level. Although slightly larger than our existing ships, Balmoral is still compact enough to offer that intimate, homely atmosphere which is so much our trademark. The combination of Balmoral's elegant comfortable cabins, world class cuisine and diverse on board activities has been designed to appeal particularly to the rapidly expanding British cruise market.
