Sintra – just outside Lisbon, this elegant town has wonderful parks and green areas and an elaborate Moorish Castle where you can walk the ramparts and the Palacio Nacional, largely built in the fourteenth century and once used as the Portuguese court’s summer home.
The famous Port is the ideal souvenir, but for non-drinkers you can invest in straw handbags, locally made ceramics, and bright hand-painted tiles.
This port town offers lots of fish, especially soft-shell crabs and various forms of pasta. Tomato soup with a poached egg in it is a local tradition

Shops which tend to close between 13:00-15:00 for a long lunch siesta.
Doca de Alcantara port, which is about two miles from Lisbon, has a small restaurant, gift shop etc but prices are higher than in town and there is nothing much to recommend staying in the port area.
