Windstar Cruises

Windstar describes its cruise vessels as motor sail yachts – which means the sails are computerised and not actually needed for navigation

When conditions are good, the engines are turned off and the ships sail by wind power, but there’s no risk of missing a port call because those engines are always waiting in reserve. The scale of these small cruise yachts, Wind Star and Wind Spirit carry just 148 passengers while Wind Surf can accommodate 312, means they can enter small ports and harbours inaccessible to the large cruise liners. And the small size doesn’t mean small service: there is a ratio of 1.3 staff member for every two passengers, meaning there is plenty of attentive service in a fairly casual atmosphere: dining is open and there are no set meal times.
